Build 42.17.0 has landed on the Project Zomboid unstable branch, and once again our team has been under the hood of the multiplayer layer that makes it run — contributing stability fixes and helping bring one of the update's headline additions to life.

The standout new feature for server administrators is prototype sprinter support in multiplayer. Enabling zombie sprinters on a live server has historically introduced edge cases that don't surface in solo play, particularly under heavy player load. We worked alongside The Indie Stone to address the knock-on effects this mode creates for server session management, making the option viable enough to ship as an opt-in prototype for the community to test.

On the wider balance side, 42.17.0 continues the occupation and trait refinements started in 42.16. Farmers now carry a Strength bonus, Chefs correctly favour bladed tools, and DIY Experts gain the Inventive trait. Smoker and High Thirst have had their point values adjusted upward to reflect how the Build 42 systems affect their real in-game impact. These are the kinds of incremental tweaks that only become possible once the core multiplayer architecture is stable enough to observe accurately at scale — which is what our work over the past several builds has been building toward.

The patch also expands sandbox mode with additional starting town options and new VHS skill-training tapes, and adjusts loot tables across all game modes. Dental floss now serves as a thread substitute for Tailoring — a small detail that required validating loot distribution across server instances to ensure consistent drop behaviour for all players. The unstable branch is open for testing now, and we continue to iterate with The Indie Stone as community feedback comes in.
